Why your recording echoes

Hard walls, floors and bare windows bounce your voice back to the microphone a split second late. That reflected sound is the hollow, distant quality you hear. Phone and laptop microphones pick up more of it because they sit far from your mouth.

BackMute predicts the late echo from the sound that came before it and subtracts it, then removes steady background noise. Light to medium echo is clearly reduced; very strong echo, like in a large hall, gets softer but stays audible.

Questions

How do I remove echo from audio for free?

Upload the recording on this page and press Clean audio. Echo and background noise are reduced in one pass, and you download the result as an MP3.

Does it remove reverb too?

Yes. Here reverb and room echo are the same thing: the sound that keeps ringing after you speak. It is reduced, though a big hall or church will still sound a little roomy.

How do I avoid echo next time?

Record in a smaller room with soft things in it, like a sofa, curtains or a bed, and keep the microphone close to your mouth. A closet full of clothes works well.
